THE ARTWORK

THE ARTWORK

is an interactive and participatory installation imagined by Chevalvert and designed with Hémisphère as part of an international Europe-Quebec call for projects.

Éloge de l'air

"OUR PUBLIC SPACES ARE LIKE OUR IMAGINATIONS, THEY ONLY HAVE MEANING IF THEY ARE SHARED."

Éloge de l'air explores this adage through movement, interaction, and cooperation. By merging two symbolic objects—the standard and the swing—Chevalvert invented a third, surreal and poetic one.

An invitation to float, breathe, sway, freely and together. All the pavillions generate a visual and collective undulation, alternating harmony or chaos according to the swaying of the audience.

DID YOU KNOW?

The standard is a large flag carried on a pole or hoisted on a rope. In the past, they were flags carried by mounted war troops. Now, they are more widely used as rallying sign for a cause.

Creative Intent

Creative Intent

Chevalvert followed a simple manifesto for the creation of Éloge de l'air:

"Be kinetic without using an engine, Make sound without using a sound system, Be interactive without complicating the experience, Be popular without forgetting to be poetic."

To be kinetic without using a motor, the creators opted for the technology of the swing, which is purely mechanical. To make sound without relying on a sound system, they rather relied on the sound of air passing through the pavilions in response to the audience’s movements. And for poetry, they enhanced the visuals and the experience with a standard and its symbolism.

Artistic Approach

Artistic Approach

In line with the Quebec-Europe collaboration initiative that brought their project to life, the creators followed the design principle of "inventing an installation for travel and intercontinental collaboration."

In other words, with Éloge de l’air, they wanted to "symbolize travel and embody movement."

In a clever play on double meaning, the installation, both simple and minimal, naturally blends into the urban environment while being designed in a modular way (thus easy to dismantle, transport, and reinstall).

In this sense, Éloge de l’air evokes not only travel and movement through its symbolism, but also through its own trajectory: from conception to diffusion, down to its very purpose.
