Our roommate the whale!
Step 1
Move around the calf
Step 2
Start by positioning yourself approximately 10 meters / 30 ft away from the whale (or the equivalent of 3 cars parked one after the other!).
Can you see the light and hear the music that accompanies the installation?
Step 3
Now, slowly get closer to the whale. What change do you perceive?

how it works
Echoes – a voice from uncharted waters is an interactive installation. The sound and lighting accompaniment of the sculpture changes according to the audience’s behavior.
You are invited to explore the whale’s surroundings. If you get too close to the whale, the sounds and lighting gradually fade until they disappear completely.
If you stay within a respectable diameter of the whale, the lights and soundscape persist.

With Echoes, Mathias Gmachl wants to make us think about our role in the destruction of natural ecosystems and remind us of the importance of preserving the wildlife around us. Both because animals add incredible beauty and diversity to our planet, but also because they play a central ecological role in maintaining the balance of nature and its ecosystems.
Good news is, communication and awareness are the first solutions to these problems! Indeed, even if it is not always easy to find ways to help our planet and its inhabitants, and it is normal to feel helpless, there are billions of humans on Earth and the more people are aware of the plight of animals, the more chances we have to save them"People’s Walk for Wildlife” in the streets of London, UK, 2018.

For example, the humpback whale. How? A scientist discovered the wonderful songs of this whale and made them known across the globe, and so people came to know and appreciate the humpback whale. Then, millions of voices came together to ban hunting and carry out protection campaigns. And it worked! Humpback whale populations slowly increased to much less worrisome levels.
